Understand blockchain by building on it.

These are the fundamentals you need before creating your first Base token — what blockchain, Base, wallets, contracts, and tokens actually are. Whether you're an investor, creator, developer, or simply curious about Web3, no coding is required. Just curiosity.

Welcome to the Launchpad

Every cryptocurrency starts with an idea. Some become global payment networks. Some power decentralized applications. Some build communities. Some are created simply for fun. But they all begin the same way — with someone deciding to create a token.

This launchpad isn't just a tool to create tokens. It's a place to understand blockchain by building on it. Whether you're an investor, creator, developer, entrepreneur, or simply curious about Web3, this guide will take you from your first idea to your first live token on Base.

You don't need to be a developer. You only need curiosity. Let's start with the fundamentals.

The Big Picture

Every token begins with an idea. That idea becomes a real digital asset through a series of steps:

This guide will walk you through each step.

What is Blockchain?

A blockchain is a decentralized digital ledger. Instead of being controlled by a single company, it is maintained by thousands of computers around the world. Every transaction is permanently recorded, making the system transparent, secure, and verifiable.

What is Base?

Base is a fast, low-fee Ethereum Layer 2 built by Coinbase on the OP Stack (the same technology behind Optimism). Base inherits Ethereum's security while settling transactions far more cheaply and quickly. Everything you create in this launcher will be deployed on Base.

What is a Wallet?

A wallet is your identity on the blockchain. It allows you to own assets, send and receive tokens, sign transactions, and connect to decentralized applications. Without a wallet, you cannot interact with blockchain. Base uses the same Ethereum-style wallet model as every EVM chain, so MetaMask, Coinbase Wallet, and any wallet supporting EIP-6963 all work out of the box.

Public Key

Your public key (wallet address) is like your email address. You can safely share it with others so they can send you tokens.

Private Key

Your private key proves ownership of your wallet. Anyone who has your private key controls your assets. Never share your private key or recovery phrase.

What is a Smart Contract?

A smart contract is a program stored on the blockchain that automatically follows predefined rules without needing a central authority. Unlike some other ecosystems, Base does not share one program across every token — creating a token here deploys its own dedicated smart contract, following the ERC-20 standard, that lives permanently on Base.

What is a Token?

A token is a digital asset created using a smart contract — on Base, an ERC-20 contract deployed specifically for your project. Unlike creating a new blockchain, creating a token creates a new asset on top of an existing one. A token can represent almost anything — a cryptocurrency, a business, a startup, a gaming currency, a community, a governance vote, a loyalty program, a meme, or a personal brand.

Coin vs Token

A coin is the native currency of a blockchain — Bitcoin (Bitcoin), ETH (Base), SOL (Solana). A token is created on top of an existing blockchain using a smart contract. This launchpad creates ERC-20 tokens on Base.

Metadata

Metadata is the information that describes your token. It usually includes the name, symbol, description, logo, website, and social links. Metadata helps users recognize and verify your project.

What Happens After a Token is Created?

Creating a token is only the beginning. After launch you'll start learning concepts such as supply, liquidity, trading, price, market capitalization, holder distribution, and tokenomics. These concepts determine how a token behaves over time.

Key Concepts

Total Supply — the total number of tokens that currently exist.

Circulating Supply — the number of tokens currently available on the market.

Maximum Supply — the maximum number of tokens that can ever exist.

Liquidity — the assets available for buying and selling a token. Without liquidity, trading cannot happen efficiently.

Liquidity Pool — a pool of two assets that allows users to trade one token for another.

Decentralized Exchange (DEX) — a platform where users trade directly from their wallets without relying on a centralized company.

Swap — the process of exchanging one token for another.

Holder Distribution — how ownership is distributed across wallets.

Market Capitalization — the estimated value of a project. Market Cap = Token Price × Circulating Supply.

Tokenomics — the economic design of a token. It includes supply, distribution, liquidity, governance, incentives, and utility.

What's Next?

Now that you understand the fundamentals, you're ready to learn something even more important: why should every crypto investor create a token? Let's find out.
